ذكذكتسئµ hosts voting rights reading and discussion program

MONROE, LA –ج‎The University of Louisiana at Monroe invites the campus and community to join a reading and discussion program titled Who Gets to Vote?

This program fosters conversations about US voting history and voter suppression. It explores how voting rights’ history intersects with the present.ج‎The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities selected ذكذكتسئµ as one of six geographically diverse sites to receive a grant to participate in their program. ج‎

“We are very honored to be awarded this grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and to be able to bring this important conversation to northeast Louisiana,â€‌ said Dr. Leigh Hersey, ذكذكتسئµ assistant professor of political science.ج‎

The discussions are free and open to the public at ذكذكتسئµâ€™s Library, Room 458. Beginning in July, attendees will discuss a new book each month through October. Everyone is welcome to participate, even those who have not read the selected book.ج‎

The discussion dates and books include:

  • 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 12 – The Embattled Vote in America: From the Founding to the Present by Allan J. Lichtman
  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 23 – The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote by Elaine Weiss
  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 20 – Bending Toward Justice: The Voting Rights Act and the Transformation of American Democracy by Gary May
  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 11 – Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All by Martha S. Jones
